Common Abbreviations

Don’t fret! I also started off baffled with all the abbreviations flying around pregnancy forums and it took many a googling to find out what they meant. Here, you’ll be able to get the A-Z on the most commonly used abbreviations. It isn’t an exhaustive list and there are many which I haven’t included simply because I haven’t personally come across them/there are just too many! However, if you want the whole shebang, you can find it here.

I have arranged the abbreviations by alphabetical order and by category so that it makes more sense.

General

AF – Aunt Flow (period)

BBT – Basal Body Temperature

BD – Baby Dance (intercourse)

BFN – Big Fat Negative (pregnancy test)

BFP – Big Fat Positive (pregnancy test)

B/W – Bloodwork

CD – Cycle Day (e.g. CD1)

CM – Cervical Mucous

DH – Dear Husband / DD – Dear Daughter / DS – Dear Son

DPO – Days Past Ovulation

EDD – Estimated Due Date

EWCM – Eggwhite cervical mucous (the good fertile stuff!)

HPT – Home pregnancy test. Measures levels of the hormone hcG which are produced in pregnancy

LMP – Last menstrual period (the first day of your last period)

MC or M/C – Miscarriage

MMC – Missed Miscarriage

O – Ovulation

OB/GYN – Obstetrician/Gynecologist

OPK / OPT – Ovulation Prediction Kit/Test. OPKs measure luteinizing hormone, the last hormone to peak before ovulation

RE – Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility specialist)

SLE – Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (commonly known as Lupus)

TCM – Traditional Chinese Medicine

TTC – Trying To Conceive

U/S – Ultrasound

Fertility Screening Tests

HSG – Hysterosalpingogram (test to see if the fallopian tubes are blocked)

LAP – Laparoscopy (minor surgery through the belly button to see if there are any problems with the uterus, tubes, ovaries or abdomen)

SA – Semen Analysis

Fertility Conditions

OHSS – Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (ovaries become swollen and painful and in the rare occasion, can be dangerous)

PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (many small cysts on the ovaries as a result of hormone imbalance)

Treatments

2WW / TWW – Two Week Wait (before pregnancy testing)

[#]DP[#]DT – e.g. 10 Days Post 5 Day Transfer = 10dp5dt (no. of days you are post [X] day transfer)

EB – Early Blastocyst

EE / ER – Egg Extraction / Retrieval

ET – Embryo Transfer

FET – Frozen Embryo Transfer

FHB – Fully Hatched Blastocyst

HB – Hatching Blastocyst

IUI – Intra-uterine insemination (where DH ejaculates into a cup and the sperm is then squirted into your cervix. This is also usually the stage before IVF)

IVF – In-vitro fertilization

PGD – Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (screening of embryos for chromosome and genetic abnormalities)

Stims – Stimulation of multiple follicles for IVF egg extraction

Bloodwork & Hormones

ANA – Anti-Nuclear Antibodies

E2 – Estradiol

Free T4 – Free Thyroxine

FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone

GnRH – Gonadotropin-releasing hormone

HcG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (the hormone detected by pregnancy tests)

LH – Luteinizing Hormone

LP – Luteal Phase

NK – Natural Killer Cells (an immune response that may result in your body rejecting/attacking the fetus)

P4 – Progesterone

T3 – Triiodothyronine

TGAb / Anti-TG – Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibodies

TRH – Thyroid Releasing Hormone

TSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
