Destination IVF – BKK Hotel Recommendations During Treatment

For your first two trips to BKK (site visit and egg extraction), you don’t really need to stay that long. One to three nights is sufficient if you’re pressed for time and as long as the hotel is clean and not too far, it will be ok. However, I highly recommend you pick a nicer hotel for your third (and hopefully) final stay for your embryo transfer. I recommend staying for at least 5-6 nights (with at least 3 nights rest after ET) in a spacious room if possible. This is because after ET, you’ll be spending 90% of the time inside the room and are advised not to move around too much. So comfort is a priority!

Below are my top six things to consider when choosing your hotel (particularly during embryo transfer stage):

  1. Food – Make sure you read up on the food reviews as you’ll most likely be getting in-room dining or eating at the hotel restaurant for the whole duration of your trip post-ET. Make sure they have a good selection of Asian and Western dishes because you won’t be able to eat spicy food (yeh, I know, and you’re in Thailand!) So if you decide to stay at The Four Seasons, bear in mind that every meal will come with the Four Seasons price tag and that could rack up a large bill. But hey! If you can afford it, then why not? 😀
  2. Location – You’ll want to be within a 20 mins max taxi ride away from the fertility centre. Bangkok is highly congested and the last thing you want is to be stuck in a long car journey after treatment. I actually threw up in the taxi post-egg extraction due to the anaesthesia. Lucky for the cabbie, we had a plastic bag on us! Also stay away from the club/bar areas as you’ll want to sleep well. There are plenty of hotel options that are away from the noise yet within walking distance to the local pub, restaurants and minimarts. Perfect for if your DH gets bored of being stuck at the hotel and you can send him on food errands!
  3. Size – Go for spacious. You’ll be cooped up in here with your DH for 5-6 nights almost 24/7.
  4. Free WIFI – Essential if you can’t live without the internet or want to Facetime/Skype family members!
  5. Cable TV Channels – Essential! Otherwise you’ll be bored outta your mind.
  6. Gym/Spa/Pool – Sounds good right? Well this isn’t for you I’m afraid :p This is for your DH to enjoy whilst you’re stuck in the room. We have to make sure they’re happy too you know!

The Well Hotel – 4.5 Stars

Executive Room

Room Types
Superior Room / Superior Corner Room / Deluxe / Executive Room / Executive Suite
HK$5XX-$15XX/night

We stayed in the Executive Room as we wanted a sofa area (but upon looking at the other rooms, it looks like they all have one). It was almost like a serviced apartment and I can tell you, it felt more spacious than some HK apartments! Ask for a room at the end of the hallway away from the lifts. Our room was right by the lifts and the noise from people talking and slamming doors was a put off.

Food

Wellness themed food with excellent and very affordable 2-course set lunches. I loved their Goji Berry, Carrot, Tomato and Ginger soup, the quinoa steak salad, the salmon burger, farmer’s burger, avocado and mango quinoa salad and delicious Thai crispy roast pork with garlic and Chinese kale. DH loved their tuna tartar in wasabi sesame dressing. I’m salivating just thinking about it! Of course, they also had a good selection of Thai dishes as well as a good selection of freshly squeezed detox juices, smoothies and herbal drinks.

Breakfast on the other hand, was a little disappointing (considering the food is so great for the rest of the day!) The options were limited and repetitive. I think if they had an egg station and served omelettes or pancakes, it would be an improvement.

Location
Sukhumvit Soi 20, Bangkok
10 mins taxi ride to SART / 8 mins walk to Asok BTS / 15 mins walk to Terminal 21 and Times Square / 10 mins BTS ride away from Tescos Lotus / 2 mins walk to Family Mart, 7-11 and lots of spa places / Couple of European restaurants right outside but if you want Thai, you need to walk about 10 mins

Facilities
Rooftop pool, gym, free muay thai, yoga and other fitness classes, spa, wifi, cable TV channels, treadmill, exercise ball and yoga mat in the larger rooms for you fitness freaks.

Notes
As the hotel is still new (one year old), there are constant promotions and deals. We received a free 15mins head, neck and shoulder massage, welcome drink, 25% off coupon for all meals and they did a 50% off the Farmer’s Burger. These promotions were valid for our entire stay so we could re-use them every day!!
Taxi drivers are not familiar with the hotel so make sure you have the hotel card, telephone number and map ready to show them.
We booked via expedia.com but you can also book directly on their website: http://www.wellhotelbangkok.com/

Amara Hotel – 4 Stars
Amara Room.jpg

Room Types

Deluxe / Cabana / Executive / Suite / Club Room / Club Lounge
HK$6XX – HK$9XX/night

We stayed in the Executive Room for HK$700/night including breakfast for one. It was an additional HK$100/day for an additional breakfast. The room was quite small in size but the furnishings and bathroom were modern and new.

Food
Breakfast buffet was really good. Great Asian and Western selection with egg station for omelettes and freshly fried eggs. We had dinner there on the first night and the Pad Thai and Papaya salad was so so – didn’t taste very authentic.

Location
29 Soi 19, Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok
15-20 mins taxi ride to SART / Close to nearby restaurants (highly recommend the seafood crab place by the pedestrian crossing. The food was delicious especially the chilli crab!) The area was almost like a Japan Town as there were many Japanese restaurants nearby, as well as a few Western ones / 7-11 a couple of mins away / 5 mins walk from the Jim Thompson Restaurant / 15 mins walk to the night market and other restaurants and shops.

Facilities
Rooftop pool and bar, spa, gym, mini snack shop at affordable prices and cafe on ground floor lobby, free wifi, cable TV.
